Thoughts on ‘The Avengers’

I don’t know if you are aware, but there is a summer movie coming out that looks of  interest to me. It’s called The Avengers and it’s about these six superheroes who team together to save the world.

Okay, I’ll cut it out. EVERYONE’S heard about The Avengers and EVERYONE knows who the cast and crew are and EVERYONE watches the preview every night before they go to sleep.

So let’s channel all of our collective energies and pool our thoughts together. What do you think about The Avengers so far?

Here are my thoughts:

“In the end, it will be every man for himself.” Is an awesome line for the antagonist of The Avengers to have. Because, ya know… Avengers are all about teamwork, right?

When Fury said they were “hopelessly outgunned” he especially meant Black Widow. Smallest. Pistol. Ever.

Captain America. I wonder if he’s got his bearings in time yet or if he still thinks that Orson Welles is alive and that the Nazis must be crushed. Poor time traveler.

Loki has a profoundly awesome slow smile. It rivals even that of Herman Cain.

In regards to the tension between Captain America and Ironman, I’m thinking they’ll either be throwing fists at each other or be lovers by the end of the movie.

There are a few quick shots of Captain America grabbing his shield, Thor’s hammer flying into his hand, and Ironman’s mask clamping shut. This would have been their chance to show Black Widow putting on her leather suit, but they did not.

I’ve wondered what they’ll do with all the heroes’ love interests—I mean, how many pining teary girls can you show in a row without it seeming sappy? (answer is zero, in case you’re wondering). But judging from this picture:

I’m speculating there might be some love-sparks and pining betwixt these two. Which would be awesome. Except that her name doesn’t bode well for Hawkeye’s future.

Oh no! Thor’s attacking Captain America. This is not as happy-feely-team-gung ho as I expected. Unless . . . Loki stole Captain America’s shield and is using it against them. Which is plausible, because it looks as if (at min 1:30) Loki also has a hammer, possibly Thor’s. Perhaps the world is doomed.

In regards to Bruce Banner. I think he has all the intensity of a butterfly in a spa. I miss Edward Norton. So much.

So now let’s hear it, what are you thoughts on The Avengers?

  1. Ahh, Loki’s smile. I may have to back the bad guys just this once. :)

    • uh, yeah . . . Loki’s pretty darn awesome. He was my favorite character in Thor. That guy has a lot of charisma and a devilish charm.

      • Me too! I always have a soft spot for villains, but I thought Loki was particularly good. He was threatening and sympathetic in roughly equal quantities, which I liked a lot. I can’t wait to see him showing down against the whole team.

  2. Great stuff, Ellie. I’m excited, and apprehensive, about this film – probably in equal parts.

    • apprehensiveness is all a part of the game. Anytime a movie is made about beloved characters, apprehensiveness is present.

  3. I am so ridiculously amped about this movie. Like you, I am also super bummed about Edward Norton not being a part of it. I feel like they could have made that work. For a movie of that magnitude and as much money as it’s going to recoup, I just am not buying that they couldn’t have brought that together.

The emergence of the story of Hawkeye and Black Widow (who, to this point have been minor characters in the background) is very compelling to me.

    Again — I. Cannot. Wait.

    • I heard Ed Norton is a bum to work with, but still . . . for the amount of talent he has I think they should have tried. However, Ruffalo has a lot of talent as well. He’s just the antithesis of intensity, lol.
I can’t wait to see it!

      • Best a bum to work with? How disheartening- who said that?

  4. Great read I look forward to more of your work :)

    • Thanks Mr. oc, it’s great to be here.

  5. Nice post, Ellie! I cannot wait for this movie. It was always a childhood dream to see these heroes on the screen together, but I never thought it would actually happen.

From the looks of it, working as a team will present a challenge at first. I foresee some initial skirmishes based on misunderstandings and personality clashes, then they’ll pull it together for the big finale. That’s part of the fun when you’re dealing with a team dynamic – lots of big personalities and lifetimes of disfunction, and they suddenly have to work shoulder-to-shoulder.

I think part of Cap’s character arc for this movie will be coming to terms with his leap forward in time. Part of his character’s appeal is that he’s a gritty throwback to old-school heroics, but he has to adjust to modern problems. In that respect, leading the Avengers should be a cathartic experience for him.

As much as I loved Ed Norton, Ruffalo will do just fine with Bruce Banner. Think of it this way – lots of writers and artists have offered their take on the character in comics, and now we’re seeing that same thing with actors and directors. I have a feeling Ruffalo may go with the Bill Bixby style, which is a little more repressed and understated. Also, one particular shot in that Super Bowl trailer makes me curious how they’re going to explain his higher level of control over the Hulk’s rage. Very curious!

Tom Hiddleston plays such an amazing Loki. He manages to make him conniving and evil in a slick/smooth kind of way, while also coming across as tragic and vulnerable. It’s a tough balance to strike, and he does it perfectly.

    • I love the team dynamic aspect of this film, Whedon is so great with team dynamics.
I can’t wait to see how they portray Banner’s control over the Hulk. And Hiddleston’s one of my favorites! Can’t wait to see him again!

  6. Two words: Joss. Whedon.

Also, two superhero movies will dominate the market this year:

    The Avengers &

    The Dark Knight Rises

    There is no third.

    • The Amazing Spiderman might give them a run for their money, but I”m pretty sure they’ll be at the top.
And yeah . . . Joss is the boss.

    • I am honestly probably more excited about The Dark Knight Rises, but am giddy like a schoolgirl over Avengers.

I feel like I’m going to suffer from withdrawal when they’re both done. What will I have to look forward to afterwards? The Superman reboot or the Superman reboot?

      Meh.

  7. I think the new Spider-Man movie will be a lot better than The Avengers and Batman 3, story wise. The Avengers will be a very nice popcorn flick, but Spider-Man will be of serious quality. And not only because it was shot in actual 3D instead of post convertion. And Batman… I couldn´t care less.

    • I agree on the Spider-Man will be serious quality comment, disagree on the couldn’t care less about Batman comment, and am undecided on whether Spiderman, The Avengers, or Batman 3 will be best. WE SHALL SEE! =) But you have to watch them all so we can compare notes. Deal?

  8. I know I speak for everyone, I think of myself as everyone, but I like Ruffalo as Banner. The new hulk looks just like him too! I did not like…whispering…Norton!

I have a friend who’s sister is friends with someone who’s boyfriend was involved in the editing of the movie…he says it’s awesome!! Just saw the new spiderman trailer and that looks good too.

    • LoL. Nice to meet you, Everyone. Now if I ever need to know what everyone’s talking about . . . I know who to go to.

  9. The Avengers… Isn’t that the one where Avon ladies take revenge on door-slammers? (Thank goodness this brilliant author straightened me out. Whew!)

    • ha! no, I think that was the plot of The Fantastic Four. ;)
Great to see you here, August.

  10. Cap & Iron man…lovers…eww.

There is no substitute for Norton in anything.

Not sure if I’m crazy aboot Scarlett Johannsen rockin the red which is the first time I’ve not felt crazy aboot absolutely anything having to do with Scarlett Johannsen.

    Nice debut, Ellie. Cheers.

  11. I really wish Ed Norton was playing the Hulk and I hope that doesn’t overshadow everything else in the movie. I loved Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, etc, when they had their own movies so can’t wait to see them together as a team!

    • I have a feeling that if the movie is overshadowed, it won’t be Ruffalo’s fault. But he’s gonna have to bring out his big acting guns for that role.

  12. true dat double true. OH how I wish they would have included the wasp and vision, but I understand the hyper-realism culture filled by the neo-noir of Christopher Nolan’s career.

But still. Wasp. Vision. Come ON!

    • I’m not sure exactly what you mean by neo-noir or hyper-realism, but the cast is pretty full right now and I think if they’d have added more they would simply be cannon fodder and not fleshed-out characters. Unless they made the movie like 6 hrs long. ;)
      Thanks for the comment, Lancelot!

  13. I’m actually looking forward to The Avengers….would you believe that up until Iron Man, the Hulk was the only Avenger that I was fully aware of? I”m a big Hulk fan, and I will miss Edward Norton (although I do like Mark Ruffalo’s voice – don’t get me wrong). I just hope the movie itself is more entertaining (like Iron Man) and less like Captain America. I had a heard time staying focused on that one.

    • I feel ya on the Iron Man vs. Captain America issue. Iron Man was witty and fun … I’d love to see that in The Avengers.

    • Best incredible hulk cover: #340 w Wolvie done by Macfarlane. Love that cover.
